Baldur’s Gate 2: Remake | A Beloved CRPG Classic May Return

BALDUR’S GATE 2: REMAKE | THE CLASSIC QUEST MAY LIVE AGAIN

A major piece of CRPG history may be heading back into active development, if a new report proves accurate. According to PC Gamer, Wizards of the Coast is reportedly working on a remake of Baldur’s Gate 2, with Kevin Martens, one of the original game’s co-lead designers, said to be involved in the project. Nothing has been officially announced by Wizards of the Coast or Hasbro yet, so this should be treated as a report rather than a confirmed reveal, but the details are interesting enough to take seriously. The most important part of the story is not only the possibility of a remake, but the name attached to it. Kevin Martens has a long BioWare history, including work on Baldur’s Gate 2, Throne of Bhaal, Jade Empire, Neverwinter Nights and Mass Effect, before later moving to Blizzard, where he worked on Diablo 3. PC Gamer reports that Martens has already been contributing to Exodus at Archetype Entertainment, a Wizards of the Coast studio, and is now reportedly involved with the Baldur’s Gate 2 remake as well.

The report also suggests that the original Baldur’s Gate may not be left behind. Since Baldur’s Gate 2 is a direct continuation of the first game, PC Gamer notes that both games could be getting remake treatment, possibly in parallel. That would make sense from a story and structure perspective, because rebuilding only the second chapter of that saga would leave a strange gap for new players coming from Baldur’s Gate 3. Still, this part remains unconfirmed, and there is no release window, trailer, platform list or official project name at the moment. This is also different from Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition, which already exists and remains available today. The Enhanced Edition includes the original Shadows of Amn campaign, the Throne of Bhaal expansion and The Black Pits II content, but that version is still built around the classic Infinity Engine experience rather than a full modern remake. A remake would suggest something more ambitious, although the actual scale of changes is unknown.

That unknown part is where the real discussion begins. Baldur’s Gate 2 is not just an old RPG with a famous name. It is one of the games that helped define party-based storytelling, companion writing, dense quest design and Dungeons & Dragons role-playing on PC. A remake could introduce the game to a much larger audience after Baldur’s Gate 3, but it would also need to be handled carefully. The original has a very specific rhythm, with real-time-with-pause combat, layered encounters and a huge amount of character-driven content. Changing too much could upset older fans, while changing too little could make the project feel like another remaster rather than a true remake. The big question is whether Wizards of the Coast would aim for something close to the classic structure or try to move the older games closer to modern expectations after Larian’s success with Baldur’s Gate 3. PC Gamer points out that Baldur’s Gate 3 was built in Larian’s own engine, so a direct mechanical copy would not be simple, and nothing currently confirms a turn-based direction. A safer approach might be a remake that keeps the spirit of the original while improving presentation, interface, accessibility and possibly offering more flexible combat options.

For CRPG fans, this is exactly the kind of report that creates excitement and caution at the same time. Baldur’s Gate 2 has the weight of nostalgia behind it, but it also has real design value that still matters today. Its companions, locations, party conflicts and long-form campaign structure are not famous only because people remember them warmly. They are famous because they helped shape how many later RPGs think about character, choice and adventure. For now, the best way to read this news is simple: promising, but not official. If Wizards of the Coast confirms the project, a Baldur’s Gate 2 remake could become one of the most important RPG announcements in years. Until then, it remains a strong report with one very interesting detail attached the possible return of a key original designer to one of the most respected CRPGs ever made.
