Subnautica 2 | System Requirements

SUBNAUTICA 2 | PC SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS SHOW A CLEAR STEP UP

Subnautica 2 now has official PC system requirements, and the first impression is pretty clear: this sequel is not trying to run like the older games. That does not mean the requirements are absurd, but they do show that Unknown Worlds is building around a more modern baseline. The jump makes sense when you look at what Subnautica 2 is trying to do. A new alien ocean, larger environments, more detailed lighting, co-op support, and a modern Early Access structure all point toward a heavier game than Subnautica or Below Zero.

The minimum requirements look reasonable enough for players with older mid-range systems, but they still make one thing obvious: very low-end PCs will probably struggle. Subnautica 2 is entering Early Access, and Early Access games often need time before performance is fully polished. That matters here because underwater games can be surprisingly demanding. The world is not just a flat map with enemies and buildings. It has water, depth, visibility, lighting, particles, movement, creatures, bases, and a constant sense of space around the player. All of that can add pressure on hardware, especially if optimization is still changing during development. The recommended requirements tell a different story. They suggest that players who want a smoother and more comfortable experience should aim for a stronger modern gaming PC. That does not automatically mean the game will be badly optimized, but it does show that Subnautica 2 is being built with higher expectations than the previous entries. This is especially important for players planning to use higher settings, higher resolutions, or co-op. Playing solo at reduced settings is one thing. Exploring a larger underwater world with friends, more effects, and more systems running at once is another.

The RAM requirement is also worth paying attention to. Newer PC games are becoming less friendly to older 8GB systems, and Subnautica 2 seems to follow that direction. For anyone still running a basic memory setup, this may be a good moment to think about an upgrade before launch. The game is not asking for a monster PC just to start, but it is clearly more comfortable with a system that has enough breathing room. That is exactly where many modern survival and open-world games are heading. Compared to Subnautica: Below Zero, the step up is easy to notice. Below Zero was lighter, more accessible, and built around older hardware expectations. Subnautica 2 looks like a proper next step rather than a small expansion with a new name. The sequel is targeting PC and Xbox Series X/S, and that newer console baseline probably plays a role in the jump. More detail, broader systems, and co-op support all come with a cost, even if the final result still ends up running well.

For pc players, the practical advice is simple: if your system only barely meets the minimum, wait for real Early Access performance impressions before expecting a perfect ride. If your PC is closer to the recommended range, Subnautica 2 should be a much safer bet, especially at 1080p or 1440p depending on settings and final optimization. The good part is that the requirements are now public, so players have time to compare their hardware before the May 14 Early Access launch. The most important detail is that these requirements belong to an Early Access version. Performance may improve, system demands may shift, and future updates could change how the game behaves on different PCs. For now, the requirements make Subnautica 2 look like a modern survival sequel with real ambitions, not just a visual refresh of the older games. It asks for more hardware, but so far it does not look unreasonable. For a game built around atmosphere, exploration, co-op, and a much larger underwater world, that feels like a fair trade as long as optimization keeps moving in the right direction.
