BEYOND PC | GLOOM GATE | THIS TINY RPG CAUGHT OUR EYE

A tiny monochrome dungeon running on a yellow handheld with a crank is not exactly where we expected one of the more interesting RPG concepts of the week to appear, but Gloom Gate managed to pull us in almost immediately. pcdoorz is, first and foremost, a PC-focused site, and that is not changing, but Beyond PC exists for exactly this kind of occasion when something outside our usual ecosystem is simply too interesting to ignore. Developed by Lukas Büffel under the LuBu name with support from Panic, Gloom Gate is being built specifically for playdate and describes itself as a reaction-based action RPG combining old-school dungeon crawling with soulslike elements. As RPG fans, that combination was enough to make us stop and take a closer look. Beneath the stark 1-bit presentation is a dark fantasy adventure built around a cursed gate, a lone knight and a maze-like journey into increasingly hostile territory, backed by a surprisingly complete set of RPG systems.

small machine, proper dungeon crawler

The appeal comes from how much traditional RPG structure LuBu appears to be fitting into Playdate’s extremely compact format. Combat happens in real time and is designed around timing and reactions rather than passive stat checks, while exploration moves through a node-based overworld connected to maze-like dungeon spaces. Players can discover and equip magical items, gain experience, level both the character and equipment, encounter NPCs and gradually improve their chances of surviving deeper encounters. None of those features are unusual on their own, but seeing them combined on hardware built around a 1-bit black-and-white display gives Gloom Gate a very different identity from the usual retro-styled action RPG. The lack of visual excess forces the game to communicate danger, movement and atmosphere through silhouettes, animation and strong contrast, and from what has been shown so far, that limitation seems to work in its favor. Even Playdate’s signature crank is not being forced into every interaction; the developer notes that all regular buttons are used, while the crank appears only in some situations and is not mandatory.

where limitation becomes character

There is also something refreshing about a game that does not need to pretend technical restriction is a problem waiting to be solved. Playdate itself is designed around a reflective black-and-white screen and deliberately unusual hardware, and Gloom Gate seems comfortable building around those boundaries instead of fighting them. That gives its dark fantasy world a strangely convincing visual identity: enemies become stark shapes, corridors become readable blocks of light and shadow, and the whole thing feels closer to an old illustrated dungeon manual that somehow started moving than a conventional modern RPG squeezed onto weaker hardware. Panic lists Gloom Gate in the RPG and Action categories, and the official description emphasizes brutal monsters, reaction-heavy combat and a mixture of classic dungeon-crawling structure with more contemporary design ideas. There is no guarantee yet that all of those systems will come together cleanly once the game is in players’ hands, but the foundation is unusual enough that it deserves attention. It is also worth noting that the developer states the project was created without generative AI, a small production detail but one that fits the handcrafted feel the game is clearly aiming for.

why it belongs here

Gloom Gate is not suddenly turning pcdoorz into a handheld site, and that is not the point. Beyond PC works best when something outside our usual platform space is interesting enough to earn the detour, and this one did exactly that. We noticed it because we like RPGs, stayed because the combat and dungeon structure looked more substantial than the tiny presentation suggested, and ended up digging deeper because the whole project has that slightly stubborn charm of a game designed around limitations rather than apologizing for them. Playdate remains a very niche piece of hardware, but niche hardware can occasionally produce ideas that would feel far less distinctive on a conventional platform. Gloom Gate is still something we need to see in finished form before making stronger claims, yet for now it has done the most important thing any small independent RPG can do before release: it made us stop scrolling and pay attention.

- SUMMARY & CONCLUSION -

GLOOM GATE IS A PLAYDATE-EXCLUSIVE ACTION RPG FROM LUKAS BÜFFEL THAT COMBINES REAL-TIME, REACTION-FOCUSED COMBAT WITH OLD-SCHOOL DUNGEON CRAWLING, EQUIPMENT PROGRESSION, EXPERIENCE LEVELS, NPC ENCOUNTERS AND A NODE-BASED OVERWORLD. ITS 1-BIT PRESENTATION AND DELIBERATELY LIMITED HARDWARE COULD EASILY HAVE REDUCED IT TO A NOVELTY, BUT THE SYSTEMS SHOWN SO FAR SUGGEST SOMETHING FAR MORE SUBSTANTIAL. WE ARE NOT COVERING IT BECAUSE IT HAPPENS TO BE ON PLAYDATE; WE ARE COVERING IT BECAUSE, AS RPG FANS, THE GAME GENUINELY CAUGHT OUR ATTENTION. FOR NOW, THAT IS ENOUGH REASON TO KEEP IT ON THE PCDOORZ RADAR.
