Angelic: Dark Symphony | A Cinematic Sci-Fi Tactical RPG

ANGELIC: DARK SYMPHONY | A CINEMATIC SCI-FI TACTICAL RPG

A distant colony has stopped responding, synthetic immortals are returning after two centuries of absence, and something considerably less understandable appears to be moving through the darkness with them. Angelicore Game Studios has recently announced Angelic: Dark Symphony, a cinematic science-fiction RPG built around turn-based tactical combat, a party of individually developed heroes and a post-human future increasingly consumed by cosmic horror. The game is currently in development for PC, with no release date announced, but its first presentation already establishes a much darker identity than the clean technological futures often associated with science-fiction RPGs. Humanity in Dark Symphony has already crossed one of its most dangerous boundaries by creating synthetic beings capable of overcoming the limitations of ordinary biological life. These immortal neo-humans eventually became known as angels, but their existence created fear rather than harmony. Humans turned against their creations, a devastating conflict followed, and the angels ultimately disappeared into deep space. Around two hundred years later they are beginning to return, only now there are indications that something unknown may have returned with them. More information and the currently revealed characters can be found through the official angelic: dark symphony website, which also provides an early look at the dark visual direction Angelicore is pursuing.

dreadheaven waits in the dark

The opening campaign will send players to Dreadheaven, a remote neo-human colony previously known as The Heaven that has suddenly gone silent. Communication has been lost and the settlement has become the center of an investigation that quickly appears destined to move far beyond a routine rescue operation. Survivors, infestations and increasingly disturbing forces await inside a location whose transformation is reflected directly in its new name, with Angelicore placing death, corruption and cosmic terror alongside the game’s technological science-fiction foundations. Early screenshots show dark industrial complexes, ruined environments, hostile landscapes and heavily shadowed interiors rather than pristine cities filled with glowing futuristic architecture, giving the game an appropriately oppressive atmosphere before much of its story has even been revealed. The material shown so far comes from a work-in-progress version and therefore should not be treated as representative of final visual quality, but the direction itself is already clear. Dreadheaven is being built as somewhere players should feel uncomfortable exploring, a place where advanced technology has not provided safety and where understanding what happened may prove considerably more dangerous than simply surviving what remains.

turn-based combat built around individual heroes

Dark Symphony approaches combat as a party-based tactical RPG rather than an action game, with encounters resolved through turn-based battles where positioning, ability combinations, battlefield awareness and cooperation between characters are expected to determine success. Angelicore is placing particular emphasis on making each member of the party mechanically distinct, giving heroes their own combat roles, signature abilities and progression paths rather than treating them as interchangeable units carrying different weapons. Characters including Seliné, Xue, Xander, Phoenix, Daeva, Odile and Chun already demonstrate the variety the studio intends to build into its roster, with different personalities and specializations forming both tactical opportunities and potential relationships within the wider story. Their importance is also intended to continue beyond combat. Heroes have individual motivations, loyalties, fears and ambitions, while player decisions can affect important moments throughout the campaign and potentially change how those relationships develop. It is an approach that could give the tactical systems substantially more weight if Angelicore succeeds in connecting character progression with narrative attachment, because the most memorable party-based RPGs rarely make players care about companions simply because one of them has the strongest attack.

a larger universe beyond the main campaign

Although Dark Symphony is being developed primarily around a narrative single-player campaign, Angelicore has broader plans for its combat systems through The Chaos Theatre, a separate multiplayer component intended to arrive as a free addition. It is designed to provide an environment where players can experiment more freely with heroes, tactical combinations and different team compositions through cooperative and competitive battles without changing the story-focused identity of the main game. That separation could ultimately work in Dark Symphony’s favor, allowing Dreadheaven and the central campaign to concentrate on exploration, characters, decisions and atmosphere while players interested primarily in tactical experimentation have another place to test the limits of the combat system. The Angelic project itself has travelled through several forms during its development, but Dark Symphony now gives it a much clearer proposition: a dark, character-driven tactical RPG set in a universe where humanity’s attempt to surpass itself created something it could neither completely destroy nor fully understand. There is still plenty Angelicore needs to demonstrate, particularly regarding progression, encounter variety and the consequences of player decisions, but the newly announced direction is considerably easier to define than many projects at this early stage.

- SUMMARY & CONCLUSION -

ANGELIC: DARK SYMPHONY REMAINS SOME DISTANCE FROM THE POINT WHERE ITS LARGER AMBITIONS CAN BE PROPERLY JUDGED, BUT ITS ANNOUNCEMENT ALREADY PROVIDES ENOUGH SUBSTANCE TO MAKE IT ONE OF THE MORE INTERESTING DARK SCIENCE-FICTION RPG PROJECTS TO WATCH. A POST-HUMAN CIVILIZATION DAMAGED BY ITS OWN PURSUIT OF IMMORTALITY, SYNTHETIC ANGELS RETURNING FROM DEEP SPACE, AN ISOLATED COLONY DESCENDING INTO COSMIC HORROR AND TACTICAL TURN-BASED COMBAT BUILT AROUND INDIVIDUALLY DEVELOPED HEROES GIVE ANGELICORE SEVERAL STRONG IDEAS TO WORK WITH WITHOUT RELYING ON A SINGLE NOVELTY TO CARRY THE GAME. DREADHEAVEN IN PARTICULAR LOOKS CAPABLE OF BECOMING AN EFFECTIVE CENTERPIECE FOR THE FIRST CAMPAIGN, COMBINING HOSTILE ENVIRONMENTS WITH THE SENSE THAT PLAYERS ARE ARRIVING SOMEWHERE LONG AFTER EVENTS HAVE MOVED BEYOND ANYONE'S CONTROL. MUCH WILL ULTIMATELY DEPEND ON WHETHER THE TACTICAL SYSTEMS REMAIN DEEP ACROSS AN ENTIRE CAMPAIGN AND WHETHER THE PROMISED CHARACTER RELATIONSHIPS AND DECISIONS CARRY MEANINGFUL CONSEQUENCES, BUT THE FOUNDATION IS COMPELLING. IF ANGELICORE CAN MAINTAIN THE OPPRESSIVE ATMOSPHERE ALREADY VISIBLE IN ITS EARLY MATERIAL WHILE GIVING ITS HEROES EQUAL WEIGHT AS TACTICAL TOOLS AND NARRATIVE CHARACTERS, ANGELIC: DARK SYMPHONY COULD BECOME A DISTINCTIVE ADDITION TO THE GROWING FIELD OF MODERN SCIENCE-FICTION TACTICAL RPGS.
